Watercress is one of the few greens that have been considered as super food. It is packed with essential vitamins and minerals and a long list of health benefits.
An excellent source of iodine, watercress aids in the proper functioning of thyroid glands. It also has significant amounts of Vitamins C and calcium. In fact, it has four times as much vitamin C as lettuce. Its calcium content is even more than that of milk.
Other vitamins and minerals found in watercress include iron salts, sulphur, manganese, folic acid, zinc, phosphorous, vitamins A, K, and B vitamins. The list of vitamins it has is long that’s why it’s considered as a plant vitamin and a mineral supplement.

In fact, regular consumption of watercress can increase antioxidant activity which helps in preventing eye diseases like cataracts and macular degeneration.
Aside from these, watercress has sulphur – it is second to horse radish in terms of sulphur content – and this plays an important role in the absorption of protein. It also purifies the blood and help build cells.
Being low in sodium but high in water content, this aquatic herb is great for people on a diet. Some people in other regions may look at watercress like an ordinary weed, but the good it does for one’s health can never be discounted.
